Axio Learning Dons A New Look, Feel This Fall
August 01, 2007 by Tina Deines
Υou might be very surprised the next time you sign in to your Axio Learning account.
That’s because we have given Axio a whole new look and feel with the August 6 release of Axio Learning Version 3.0.
Version 3.0 boasts many improvements over previous versions, and it is more user-friendly and navigable. Some highlights include new tools such as Course Statistics, Attendance, Gating, and the ability to create a voice recording; an improved Course Organizer, which is now called My Organizer; and upgrades to the Assignment Manager, Roster and Message Board.
As always, we aim first and foremost to serve the Axio Community, and the changes present in Version 3.0 are reflective of the feedback we have received from Community members.
Highlights of Version 3.0
General
Navigational improvements have been made to make Axio more user friendly and consistent. This includes footer navigation so you can access all tools without having to return to the Tools page. We have also included a new section called My Quick Links, where you can assemble your own set of frequently used links. To add a quick link, navigate to the page where you want to add a quick link, and click the Add » link.
Course Tools page
The Tools page has been reorganized for easier access.
My Organizer
You can now reorder or hide your courses in your My Organizer. Hiding a course does not remove the course, but hides it for improved organization.
In addition, My Organizer now features a new design, which includes My Notepad, a feature that lets you create and write notes to yourself. These notes will be saved until you change or erase them. A My Links option is also available for you to place links to your frequently visited Web sites.
A new feature called Recent Activity has also been added, which tracks and numerically reports activity within a course.
- Instructor reports include the following: new file dropbox uploads, new message board posts, assignments submitted, course visits and new calendar events.
- Student reports include the following: new announcements, new message board posts, grades posted, new assignments and new calendar events.
Course Statistics
Instructors can view statistics on the number of accesses for each file or tool within a course. Course statistics are displayed in raw numbers and percentages, and in graphical format (when possible), to help instructors track course usage trends.
Assignments
Instructors can now create extra-credit questions and assignments. The extracredit points are kept separate from the assignment points.
Also new to Assignments is a feature called Practice Assignments, which allows students to take an assignment and immediately see if they answered questions correctly or incorrectly. Students can take the assignment as many times as they want until they are satisfied with their score.
Gating
Instructors can gate files, folders and assignments. Gating allows for instructors to require a student to access or complete specified course work before they are permitted to access other course work.
Gated assignments are multi-take, and instructors can define the gating criteria by submission, percentage or points. If you set your gate for submission, the students need only submit an assignment to pass the gate. With percentage or points, however, students must meet a minimum score or percentage set by you.
The Gating Progress tool allows instructors to monitor and manage students’ progress.
Voice Recording Tools
Instructors can now create a voice recording for their course in MP3 format. Students can download and stream the recording later.
File Dropbox
Instructors can now control what type of files can be uploaded in a course. Also new is the ability to add a File Dropbox in any folder or subfolder.
Axio also has added a new preference to have all unpublished files locked upon upload. Enabling this feature will notify the system to automatically lock the files instructors and students upload.
Roster
The addresses in the e-mail column are now links. Instructors can click any e-mail address to launch the e-mail tool and send mail directly to that user.
Message Board
The Message Board now has an HTML editor, which allows you to select fonts, text and background colors, and the formatting style of your threads.
In addition, instructors can now delete or unarchive archives on the Message Board by using the Manage Archives tool. You can also change the board index to list the unread message count from inside the boards; print individual threads from the Message Board; and rename Message Board archives.
Private Memo
Axio users can now create their own Private Memo, a one-way message from an instructor to a user. A memo cannot be replied to or deleted by a student. Instructors can edit, delete, unpublish or publish sent memos at any time.
Attendance
Attendance is a new feature that tracks students’ attendance at pre-defined events. For each event, instructors can mark students as Present, Tardy, Absent (Excused), or Absent (Unexcused). Instructors can create events arbitrarily, as they do not have to match the pattern of in-class meeting times. You can export attendance marks to the gradebook as frequently (or infrequently) as you desire.
